SolidLine Media has spent a lot of time on soundstages shooting product demo video productions like these over the years. We thought we’d share our Top 5 Tips when it comes to shooting a product how-to video. Let’s get started…

1. KEEP IT CLEAN

You’re trying to highlight how to assemble or operate a product – clutter won’t help. It’s always neat to show the product in its environment, but keeping the shot clean (say with a simple white background) during the explanatory sections keeps the audience’s complete attention on the product itself. Make sure to keep the product clean as well – wipe off any fingerprints before shooting.

2. CUT TO THE CLOSE-UP

Wide shots are necessary to establish the product and where all of its components are located, but make sure to get in close so viewers can easily see how operations are performed, or parts are assembled.

3. MOVE THE CAMERA

Long static shots of assembling can test a viewer’s patience. Keep the camera moving, even in the slightest motions. A soft jib or dolly will add value and excitement to the scene.

4. FRAME FOR GRAPHICS

Plan each shot in advance and make sure to factor for on-screen text, graphic or overlays. Solid pre-production work will make sure you avoid any costly re-shoots, and it will create a much nicer custom shot.

5. HAVE EXTRA PRODUCT ON HAND

Issues can arise at the last minute, even with the product. It’s always important to have extra product on hand in case something goes wrong or an accident happens. You’ll appreciate having a new secondary product as a back-up.
