The perfect video can do wonders for your business. The not-so-perfect video can do the opposite. We here at SolidLine Media know that picking the right video production company is an extremely important decision.

We thought we’d throw together a list of questions you should ask ANY company before making this big choice, including us. Here are five quick inquiries to make:

What kind of experience do you have in developing a production like ours?

It sounds like an obvious one, but it’s really important. Do you want to be the first experiment for a new video production company, or do you want to trust somebody who has worked on projects like yours before? Ask for specifics and WHY the company makes a good candidate to produce your video.

Do you outsource or freelance any creative work?

This is a HUGE question. At SolidLine Media, we’ve compiled a staff of professionals who work together on a daily basis. Before going into any project, it’s good to know if there is a steady team of employees that will be there when changes need to be made in a hurry. When you need something now, the last thing you’ll want to hear is that an editor or motion graphics artist who worked on your project is tied up with freelance work elsewhere.

Will I incur additional costs above and beyond the quote?

Be wary of companies that provide “estimates” but send you a surprise bill at the end of the production. Working with a company that has a “bottom line” pricing structure will ensure you don’t go over budget and the project will get done to your liking.

What are the travel charges?

While SolidLine Media never charges extra for travel in the United States, many companies have fees to shoot in locations across the country. Make sure you’re aware of everything you’ll be on the hook for when the video is completed.

How much should I plan to spend for the production?

Before you call a company, have a potential budget range in mind. Videos can cost as little as a few thousand dollars, to the upper six figures. If you only have $5,000 to spend, why spend precious time listening to pitches you’ll never be able to afford? Also, beware of companies that estimate they’ll be able to do $10,000 worth of work in a $5,000 budget. Make sure you’re on the same page about what you’d like to spend, and how high you’re willing to go.
