I reached out to Courchane for a brief chat about his recent victory.

SLM:  WHAT WAS YOUR STRATEGY GOING INTO THE BRACKET?

COURCHANE:  I could tell you about how I paid meticulous attention all year to make up for my lack luster finish last year. I could bring up how I got the Midwest section perfect, and FGCU was the only part about the South I got wrong. It might be worth mentioning I was able to put my conference biases aside and pick winners. But Mike Petrik got second place in the office, so there is clearly no such thing as strategy.

SLM:  BE HONEST, HOW MANY MATCH-UPS DID YOU HAVE TO GUESS ON?

COURCHANE:  None. There were a few upsets, but no one picked The Shockers shocking the West, or LaSalle and FGCU making runs. I looked at match-ups, especially who would win in the paint, and which teams had the highest Points Per Possession. Stats for teh winz!

SLM:  WHERE DID YOU WATCH THE WINNING GAME FROM?

COURCHANE:  My couch, with a bag of Chicken and Waffle Lays chips, and a Headwaters Pale Ale.

SLM:  WHAT WAS THE COMPETITION LIKE AMONG THE SOLIDLINE CREW?

COURCHANE:  Well, Adam definitely knows sports, and Kromm and Vass are aware that they exist…beyond that…let me put it this way: Ali forgot to pick a winner for the championship game, and still beat Kevin, Ed, and Marcus.

SLM:  WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU HAD AN ADVANTAGE GOING INTO THIS COMPETITION?

COURCHANE:  I contacted my people at Biogenesis, they gave me a huge advantage. Just not the Ryan Braun advantage. Innocent until PROVEN guilty! (10 points to any reader who understands and chuckles at this sports joke)

SLM: HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A WINNER AND HOW DOES THE CREW FEEL ABOUT YOUR VICTORY?

COURCHANE:  What can I say? Winning is just what I do. Chili cook off, Foursquare mayorship, and now this. I don’t think I ruffled any feathers when I printed off my winning bracket and hung it on the refrigerator, I think all the not-winners around here appreciated seeing a winner. I’m pretty sure I heard Ed say it’s like seeing the Mona Lisa, but more emotional.

SLM:  WHAT IS YOUR SPORT OF CHOICE?

COURCHANE:  Definitely baseball. I’m a big fan of all the sabermetric stats, and seeing all the subtle intricacies of the game. Some people are nerds about film, some people are nerds about who has the highest WAR (Wins Above Replacement) and RAA (Runs Above Average). Plus, if your team loses, you usually don’t have to wait too long for another game.

SLM:  WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH YOUR FREE DAY OFF?

COURCHANE:  Well, since I’m getting married in August, I had to rearrange some of my annual outdoors trips. I’ll probably save my day off for the Friday before Opening Day of whitetail season up in Wisconsin, that way I can get up there a day early. Jenna [his fiancé], if you’re reading this, please don’t kill me.

There you have it, another MarchMadness behind us and another championship victory under Courchane’s belt…he’s definitely not letting this get to his head.
