The footage will also be displayed on the Jumbotron at Soldier Field during upcoming Bears games.

After ten years of the run, the Midtown 5K has hosted over 5500 runners/walkers and has donated over $200,000 to Bears Care. Their donation supports Chicagoans, especially disadvantaged children and their families, youth athletics, and medical research and awareness programs focusing on breast and ovarian cancer.

We are already looking forward to next year’s inspiring race so we sat down with event coordinator, Robyn Kove, to get the inside scoop on what Midtown Athletic Club is all about.

SLM:      Why did Midtown Athletic Club start organizing the Fitness 5K?

Robyn Kove:      We are actively engaged in making our community a better place. And, by virtue of our purpose and philosophy, we’re well suited to have a positive impact on our community. Midtown Athletic Club is about exercise, health, well-being, connections and helping people to achieve their goals. What better place to host an event?!

SLM:      Was there anything new about this year’s event?

RK:         We had a new sponsor, which is always an honor.  “Nissan Next” became a sponsor and previewed their new vehicles before and after the event.

SLM:      What is your personal favorite part of the event?

RK:         The best place to be on race day (besides the food line!) is at the finish line. It is so rewarding to high five the finishers as they cross. The excitement of accomplishment on the part of the participants is an incredible experience and the stories of success are heartwarming!

SLM:      Do any special moments stand out from this year’s festivities?

RK:         Well, every year my mother comes up from Boynton Beach, Florida to participate in our 5K. This year, while out on the course, she met a participant who has MS. They talked, walked and encouraged each other to finish. They held hands as they crossed the finish line together and the participant thanked my mom and told her she could not have done it without her.

SLM:      Looking towards the future, any specific goals for the 2013 Fitness 5K?

RK:         We have a very good problem on our hands: we’re reaching capacity for the number of participants. This year we hosted 900 runners and walkers and are expecting even more next year. For next year we’d love to hit capacity before race day.

SLM:      How much did Midtown raise for Bears Care this year?

RK:         As the Bears have been a little busy winning football games, we haven’t presented the check yet.  However, I can tell you that last year we donated $30,000 and this year’s donation won’t be a penny less!

The Midtown Athletic Club will present Bears Care with this year’s donation in a ceremony on November 28th. Stay tuned for our announcement of the grand total; follow @solidlinemedia on twitter or like us on Facebook.
