Video needs to be fast and engaging with a direct message.

Promotional videos, especially online promotional videos, shouldn’t really be longer than 3 minutes — we see the best results at the :90 mark. As interested as you may think your audience is, sustaining viewers’ attention can be rather challenging when producing a video, and you want to make sure they see the call to action at the end of the video instead of stopping it because they are bored. We always recommend :90 to our clients and usually end up somewhere between 2 and 3 minutes.

Of course, there are always some exceptions.

If you are producing a conference opener video, you are working with a truly engaged audience and therefore are able to push that goal length to 5 minutes. A safety or training video can easily exceed 25 minutes; the length of this sort of educational video is determined by the content that needs to be included and usually doesn’t require a time limit.

 

Producing a :90 video is harder than producing a 5 minute video.
