Dylan’s Intern Diary – Part 4

By Dylan Ptak, SolidLine Summer Intern

Another busy few weeks are in the books here at SolidLine, after back-to-back shoots in Boston and back here in Chicago I’m ready for more. The first shoot was in Lowell, MA, which is about 30 miles outside of Boston. It was very cool to hit the east coast; this trip would mark my first time in New England. I must say I found it very interesting with the all of the old architecture that gave it a very classic American feel. We were shooting with SolidLine client Qvidian at their Lowell headquarters located in an old brewery that had been revamped and converted into office space. It was a very cool spot and not a bad place to show up to work at everyday.

walking videoOur shoot was mostly steadicam work so Carl, SolidLine’s steadicam operator of choice, came along for the trip and showed us a thing or two. When you’re working with lights, sound, talent and a professional camera like the Sony F3 setting up a shot can be a time consuming task. When you’re setting up for a steadicam shot you can pretty much double that set up time. You have to worry about the scenes having proper lighting while at the same time making sure you aren’t catching any shadows of the crew. On top of that you have a constant moving camera and constant moving talent so everything needs to be well planned out and executed even better for the shot to truly work. So in other words it was a long day and a lot of work, but I can definitely say it was worth it after I saw the shots cut together. It wasn’t all work though, the first night we were there we all got to attend a Lowell Spinners game. They are the local single A baseball team and I must say I had a great time.

After returning from Boston we were at Resolution Digital Studios bright and early Monday morning to begin our 4-day shoot videographerswith Husqvarna and their line of Poulan lawn care products. It was a long and tedious shoot with some shot lists having over 60 shots on them. Luckily we have our experienced crew who know how to get the job done while at the same time having fun. It also helped that the client was very easy to work and get along with. Overall it was a great shoot that we finished ahead of schedule, which is almost unheard of in this industry. I’ll be headed to Orlando with the SLM crew in September for my final trip with everyone and I can’t wait.
